The fiction writer works his or her magic within the framework of a
personally compelling idea in any number of genres
or categories. In a general fiction sense, I weave
history with the characteristics of the romantic
character-hero, an idealist, driving it along. The
elements and search for personal meaning in and
through crisis, willing sacrifice of self,
developing love, values, having tests of faith,
showing endurance, and hopes of some redemption and
victory required to save the day, seem to be the
ingredients which I find most compelling in a
well-rounded main character; the old-fashioned
romantic in me that it is.
As pen goes to paper a good writer sees the action
and the characters come to life, speak their minds, make their cases. When historical evidences are included they most often are considered true events which the storyteller weaves in to his or her fiction to make the story, the plot, the characters seem more plausible to the reader. What many readers may not realize is that certain elements of truth may also be woven in to the stories based upon the writer’s personal history.
I have used personal history to some degree in all four novels produced. I believe most writers use people, places, or events they are familiar with to some degree in their story-telling. This often allows the writer the necessary emotion and sense of reality they wish to portray. Some of the names, places, events have for their basis in fiction something that I or my family may have participated in, even if only in a small detail or way. So here go the confessions.
